Ohio Health Download Presentation
MY EXCURSION INTO HEALTHCARE.
Just returned from Columbus, Ohio where I addressed 400 healthcare execs. My presentation was given more depth by my recent open-heart surgery experience. The emphasis of the conference was compliance and a heavy focus on the laws regulating the industry with a clear goal to keep health orgs, especially hospitals out of court and trouble (and the execs out of jail) by scrupulous compliance with law. I agree but I tried to add an overriding values dimension with the focus to keep them out of Hell and get them into Heaven. That’s an overstatement but my message was that if we pay more attention to BIG E ethics – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship – Little E Ethics (such as compliance with regulatory requirements, illegal payments to docs for referrals, fraudulent billing) will not be a problem. Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do. I also stressed how good organizations can get better by adopting state-of-the-art patient-centered strategies and focusing not only on treating illness and injuries but on alleviating physical and emotional pain and promoting wellness.
